Evil Is The Envier
Jealousy Becomes Hell
You Know Both Very Well

The Quran
Surah Saad
Letter 'Saad'

71. Your Lord said to the angels,

‘I will create a man from dark clay.

72. When I have shaped him

and breathed

from My Spirit into him,

bow down before him.’

73. The angels all bowed

down together,

74. but not Iblis (Satan),

who was too proud.

He became a rebel.

75. God said, ‘Iblis,

what prevents you from

bowing down to the man

I have made with

My own hands? Are you

too high and mighty?’

76. Iblis said,

‘I am better than him: You

made me from fire,

and him from dark clay.’

77. ‘Get out of here!
You are rejected:

78. My rejection will follow you

til the Day of Judgement!’

79. but Iblis said, ‘My Lord,

grant me respite until

the Day when they are

raised from the dead,’

80. so He said,
‘You have respite

81. til the Appointed Day.’

82. Iblis said,

‘I swear by Your might!

I will tempt all

83. but Your true servants.’

84. God said, ‘This is the truth-

I speak only the truth-

85. I will fill Hell with you and
all those that follow you.’

86. [Prophet], say,

‘I ask no reward from you for this,

nor do I claim to be what I am not:

87. this is only a warning for all people.

88. In time you will certainly

come to know its truth.’

The Quran
Surah Al-A'raf
The Heights

12. [Allah] said,
“What prevented you
from prostrating
when I commanded you?”
[Satan] said, “I am better than him.
You created me from fire
and created him from clay.”

13. [Allah] said,
“Descend from Paradise, for it
is not for you to be arrogant here.
So get out; indeed, you are
of the disgraced.

14. [Satan] said,
“Pardon me until the Day
they are resurrected.”

15. [Allah] said, “Indeed, you
have been pardoned.”

16. [Satan] said, “Because You
have put me in error, I will
surely sit in wait for them
on Your straight path.

17. Then I will
come to them
from in-front them
and from behind them
and on their right
and on their left, and
You will not find most of
them grateful [to You].”

18. [Allah] said,
“Get out of Paradise,
rejected and disgraced.
Whoever follows you
among them –
I will surely fill Hell
with you, all together.”

Surah Al-Kahf
The Cave
Verse 50

(Recall) when We said to the angels,
“Prostrate yourselves before Adam.”
So, they prostrated themselves,
all of them but Iblis (Satan).
He was of the Jinn, so he rebelled
against the command of your Lord.
Do you still take him and his progeny
as protectors instead of Me,
while they are enemies to you?
What a bad bargain for the evildoers!

"Everyone of you has been assigned
a companion from the Jinn.”
The Sahaabah asked,
“Even you, O Messenger of God?”
And the Prophet replied,
“Even me, except that God has helped me
against him and he has submitted.
Now he only tells me to do good.”

30. So, the angels - all of them -

fell down in prostration.

31. but not Iblis (Satan),

who refused to prostrate

32. Allah asked, “O Iblis!

33. He replied,

“It is not for me to

34. Allah commanded,

36. Satan appealed, “My Lord!

39. Satan responded, “My Lord!

Jealousy generally refers
to the thoughts and feelings
of insecurity, fear, and concern
over a relative lack of love,
possessions or safety.
Jealousy can consist
of one or more emotions
such as hate, anger, resentment,
inadequacy, helplessness, or disgust.

Envy is an emotion that occurs
when a person lacks another's
superior quality, achievement,
or possession and either desires it
or wishes that the other lacked it.
Aristotle has defined envy as a pain
at the sight of another's good fortune,
"those who have what we ought to have".
Envy is to rejoice at the misfortune of others.

Surah An-Najm
The Star
Verse 24-25

Should every person simply

When in fact, to Allah alone,

the hereafter.

Jealousy
is a disease of the heart, it is perhaps one of the first and oldest problem of human beings. Some Islamic scholars say that jealousy is the root of sin, and the first sin that was committed. Jealousy can even cause a person to hate God, resentful as to why some have what they deeply desire and strive to have, and yet, they do not have it. They may even become hateful of God's Will and turn in rebellious rejection against God's religion, becoming a bitter disbeliever, a denier, a Kafir.

A sin is something that is harmful to the sinner and harmful to others around them. Jealousy is an unseen sin, a slow creeping invisible bitterness that goes unnoticed until it finally emerges in violence. Both the envier and the envied are victims of jealousy and both can be destroyed by it. Jealousy is an inferiorizing, agonizing emotion that causes the envier to feel rejected, humiliated and victimized. If the envier does not find relief, suffering in their hateful bitterness, they will then seek to destroy the happiness and success of others around them.

Almost every personal conflict and global conflict, such as war and genocide can be traced back to the root of evil sin: jealousy. Jealousy caused the Jinn Iblis, who was a loyal, admiring worshipper of Allah to become Satan, a bitter rebellious disbeliever, a denier, a Kafir.

Iblis's (Satan's) jealousy is rooted in bigoted racism, feeling his being (smokeless fire wind) is superior to Adam's being (dark clay mud), confused as to why someone weaker, who is beneath himself, arriving after him can end up with more honour than him. When Allah asked the Jinn Iblis why he did not fall prostrate to Adam like all the Angels did after Allah commanded all in heaven to do so, he said:

Iblis said,

‘I am better than him! You
made me from fire,
and him from dark clay.’
(38:76)

This is the moment Allah Almighty became displeased with Iblis for his prideful racist bigotry, this is the root of his evil sin. Allah expelled Iblis for his prideful arrogance.

(Allah) said: "(O Iblis) get down
from this (Paradise),
it is not for you to be arrogant here.
Get out,
for you are of those
humiliated and disgraced."

(7:13)

Allah commanding Iblis to prostrate to Adam was the insult to Iblis's injury, his bitter jealousy. This was the final straw that drove Iblis into his torment of bitter rejection of Allah's Will and the eternal burning violent hatred of all humankind.

Allah made mortal man Adam and his descendants the Khalifa (ruler) on this Earth instead of the unseen Jinn, Iblis. Even though Iblis had fought Jinn demons on earth for their transgressions, thus Allah favoured him above all the Jinn. Iblis feels hurt because he was with Allah, in the ranks of Angels within Heaven worshipping, praising and admiring Allah long before Adam was even a thought. Iblis believed he would be given the gift of Khalifa (kingship) on Earth, since Allah had already blessed him with magical powers to dominate the evil jinn of earth.

Allah selected him from among the Jinn race to be a devout worshipper in Heaven, among the glorious Angels. This status caused Iblis to grow slowly arrogant during the many eons he was worshipping Allah in Heaven, feeling he was the most pious being. Iblis believed Allah loved him more than any other being in all of creation. After Allah banished Iblis out of Paradise, for his bigotry, Iblis asked for respite, until the Day of Judgment.

[
Satan said], “Pardon me until
the Day they are resurrected.”
[Allah] said, “Indeed, you have
been pardoned.”
[Satan] said, “Because You have
put me in error,
I will surely sit in wait for them
on Your straight path.
Then I will come to them
from in-front them,
and from behind them,
and on their right,
and on their left,
and You will not find most
of them grateful [to You].”
[Allah] said, “Get out of Paradise,
rejected and expelled.
Whoever follows you among them –
I will surely fill Hell
with you, all together."
(7:14-18)

Thus, Iblis fell from the grace of Allah's Paradise, turning to rejected rebellion against Allah's Divine Will. From this moment, Iblis fell into his own broken-hearted hatred of Allah Almighty and His Holy Will. Iblis promised to Allah to wage war against all humankind until the end of time. The magical Jinn Iblis then turned to clay man Adam's hallow dark clay body with his powerful magical penetrating envious evil eyes:

“Do You see?
This one, whom you have honoured above me,
if You give me respite until the Day of Judgment,
I shall surely bring his descendants
under my control,
all of them,
except a few!”

(17:62)

Allah blew His Soul into Adam's hallow clay body and created his spouse, Hawwa (Eve), and did the same for her. Both Adam with his wife Hawwa, along with Iblis were in the Eternal Gardens of Paradise. So Allah warned them.

And remember
when We said to the angels,
“Prostrate before Adam,”
so they all did—but not Iblis,
who refused arrogantly.
So We cautioned,
“O Adam! This is surely an enemy
to you and to your wife.
So do not let him drive you both
out of Paradise,
for you would then suffer hardship."
(20:116-117)

Iblis (Satan) tempted Adam and his wife
(peace and blessings be upon both of them).

But Satan whispered to him,
“O Adam! Shall I show you
the Tree of Immortality
and a Kingdom
that does not
fade away?”
(20:120)

They ate from the tree, causing them to become aware of the shame of their nudity, so they started to cover themselves with leaves, from the Eternal Garden. But they repented for their sin and Allah forgave them. Later, Allah sent them down, along with Iblis to Earth for the test of life.

Allah said,
“Descend, both of you,
from here together [with Satan]
as enemies to each other.
Then when guidance
comes to you from Me,
whoever follows My guidance
will neither go astray [in this life]
nor suffer [in the next]."
(20:123)

Adam and Hawwa had two sons, Abel (Habil) and Cain (Qabil). Both were the victims of jealousy, Iblis was whispering into the hearts of both the brothers, causing the bitter animosity of jealousy to grow unnoticed. Cain eventually killed his brother Abel, because of the slow creeping evil that is jealousy. Referring to this, Allah Almighty says:

“[O Prophet] But recite unto them
with truth the tale of
the two sons of Adam,
how they offered each a sacrifice,
and it was accepted from one of them
and it was not accepted from the other.
(The one) said: I will surely kill thee.
(The other) answered: Allah accepted only
from those who ward off (evil).
Even if thou stretch out thy hand
against me to kill me,
I shall not stretch out my hand
against thee to kill thee,
lo! I fear Allah,
the Lord of the Worlds.”
(5:27)

Jealousy is called hasad, in Arabic. In the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there is ample guidance to save us from jealousy and its harmful effects. Jealousy is that you hate to see anything good in, or with another person, and you wish to see that person lose that good thing.

However, if you see something good in, or with another person, and you also want the same thing for yourself, without hating the other person, or wishing that person to lose that good thing, then this is not called jealousy in Islam.

Islam allows competition in goodness. Islam allows that people try to excel, and do things better, but without getting involved in hatred, pettiness, and jealousy, and without wishing bad things for others.

Whether it is money, beauty, power, fame or lust, all material things are finite. It is for this reason people normally get jealous about material things. People fear scarcity, and feel alarmed when others have materialistic success, they think it will diminish their chances of materialistic success. One should try to pay less attention to material things, and more to spiritual things. The spiritual things are infinite, more fulfilling, and eternal. There is no fear that if one has something spiritual, that the other may not have it, or may have less of it. So there is no jealousy in spiritual things. That is why it is said that there will be no bitterness of jealousy in Paradise. People in paradise will be able to live in harmony, and peace because the evil of jealousy will not be present in their hearts.

"
And We will remove
whatever is in their breasts
of resentment,
[so they will be] brothers,
on thrones facing each other."
(15:47)

Causes of Jealousy

Imam al-Ghazali, who was a great Muslim
ethical thinker, philosopher and scholar,
said that jealousy is often caused by:

1-Enmity:
One has animosity for a person or group
and does not want to see anything good
happen to that person or group.

2-Ambition:
It hurts a person
to see someone else
ahead or above him/her.

3-Pride and Arrogance:
When a person is
self conceited and arrogant,
he/she feels very jealous
to see anyone else going
ahead or doing better.

4-Astonishment:
Sometimes a person feels
astonished that another person
could do better than him/her.
He/she feels surprised:
‘How come that person become
so rich, so successful,
so popular, etc.?’

5-Fear:
Fear that if another person
would have such and such thing,
then he/she may not have it.

6-Desire for power and prestige:
Sometimes a person
becomes jealous because
he/she wants to make oneself
great by putting others down.

7-Evil nature and avarice of the heart:
Some people just do not like
to see others happy.
They want to see the whole world
in misery and difficulty
except their own selves.

Normally, jealousy occurs among people who know each other. It happens among siblings, among family members, people of the same profession and age. A Muslim must always keep in mind that jealousy is forbidden. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,

“Do not be jealous of each other,
do not boycott each other,
do not hate each other,
do not contrive against each other.
Be all of you brothers to each other,
O Servants of Allah.”

How to Overcome Jealousy

First believe that there is no will, except for Allah Almighty's Will, the one, and only eternal will, the one, and only holy will, causing all things, good and bad. Allah Almighty alone is the cause of all the events, that lead to the blessings and misfortunes of yourself and others. It is not mankind who provides talent, intelligence, children, safety, health, wealth, love, beauty and so on. Indeed, it is only Allah who provides and preserves then takes away all of these good things. Allah tests people with good things, it is an extremely difficult test when a person loses something or someone he or she loves intimately, sincerely and deeply. This fleeting life is merely a perishing commodity, all possessions lose their value with time. In the end, all you have is your character, your good deeds, and your faithful love of the only God, Allah Almighty.

"Every soul shall
taste death.
It is only on the Day
of Judgment
that you shall be paid
your rewards in full.
So, whoever has been kept
away from the Fire
and admitted into Paradise
has truly succeeded.
The worldly life is nothing
but an illusory enjoyment"

(3:185)

Muslims should only live for, and sincerely desire Allah Almighty alone, the Face of Allah is the greatest ecstasy, your true home is the eternal afterlife. The Prophet (peace be upon him) passed by the carcass of a one-eared goat, and he reached out to take its ear. The Prophet said:

Which one of you would like this for a coin?

They said, “Who among us would want it
while it is worth nothing?
What would we do with it?”

The Prophet said three times,
Would you like to have it?

They said no, each time, and said,
“No, by Allah, if it were alive
it would be defective
as it only has one ear.
How so if it were dead?”

The Prophet said,
By Allah, the worldly life
is less important to Allah
than this carcass is to you.

In order to overcome jealousy, first of all, we must remember that it is haram, and it displeases Allah. If you feel resentment, aversion, uneasiness, or any negativity to any person, who has never harmed you, just know it is because of jealousy that you feel this discomfort. A jealous person is a sick person, and he/she must try to get rid of this sickness. One method that helps overcome jealousy is, if you feel jealous of some person, know these emotions are from the evil within you, don't hold on to these feelings, allow them to pass through you, never take them to heart, rejecting them as evil taunts from Iblis (Satan). Your soul exists in the unseen world, and is constantly being affected by jinn, angels, and other souls, this is where all your emotions, and motivating inclinations originate from. Evil whispering from both men, and jinn cause the painful binding knots of jealousy to emerge, constricting the heart into bitterness. It Is best to lower your gaze, and not concern yourself in gossip, nor competing in vain falsehoods of worldly and perishing distractions that avert your attention away from Almighty Allah, who is your true goal, your paradise, your everlasting life.

Jealousy is a disease, that radiates through the air, like pollution, affecting both the envier and the envied. Behind every eye, from both humans and jinn, there is an unseen power that operates in the unseen world. The jinn also envy humans, wishing to destroy them, as the jinn were on earth before. Evil jinn are bitter and hateful to other jinn and humans. People who practice magic call upon evil jinn to do harm to people. This is called the 'Evil Eye' in Islam, the eye of envy, the left eye. The envied person may become sick, stressed, falling into despairing depression, and frantic anxiety, or even commit suicide due to the envier's unseen evil radiating toward the victim's soul. This is why, in Islam, modesty is of the most importance. Believers must never show off their physical beauty, their love life, their wealth, their children, their accomplishments, and so on. Being boastful in both performing good deeds, and with Allah's blessings are major sins in Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Verily, what I fear most for you
is the lesser idolatry.”
And he elaborated,
“It is showing off.
Allah the Exalted will say
to them (who show off),
on the Day of Resurrection,
when the people are being
rewarded for their deeds:
Go to those whom,
you wished to show off to,
in the world, and look for your
reward with them."

The sin of showing-off is called Al-Riyaa, in Arabic. Allah's blessings are intimate gifts that Allah intended to be enjoyed in privacy, thankfulness and in intimate sincerity, and not taunted in the faces of the less fortunate. Muslims are ordered to live modestly and quietly, freeing themselves from the shackles of materialistic attention-seeking desires, such as fame, fortune, and social status, that bind people to worldly life, preventing divine spirituality from blossoming.

"Do not turn your nose up at people,
nor walk about the place arrogantly,
for God does not love arrogant
or boastful people. Be
moderate in your pace.
And lower your voice,
for the ugliest of all voices is
certainly the braying of donkeys.”

(31:18-19)

Those who live in jealousy, live under stress and bitter unhappiness. They continuously ruin their intimate relationships, and push people away with their bitterness. They often ruin their own health, and live a miserable life. If you feel that someone is jealous of you, and may try to harm you, then take your precautions, and pray to Allah to protect you from the evil of the jealous people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach Surah al-Falaq (Chapter 113) to protect from jealousy. It is good to recite this Surah and the following Surah An-Nas (Chapter 114) before you go to sleep.

Also read it to your children and dear ones, asking Allah’s protection for them from every evil. There is another beautiful du`aa’ (supplication) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach for this purpose:

“A`udho bi-kalimatillah al-tammah min sharri kulli shaitanin wa hammah wa min kulli `ainin lammah.”

“I seek the protection
by the most perfect words
of Allah from the evil
of every devil or creature
and from every evil look.”
