The Women

75. Why should you not fight

in God's cause and for those

oppressed men, women,

and children who cry out,

"Lord, rescue us from

this town whose

people are oppressors!"

76. The believers fight

for God’s cause, while

those who reject faith

fight for an unjust cause.

Fight the allies of Satan:

Satan’s strategies

are truly weak.

77. [Prophet],

do you not see

those who were told,

‘Restrain yourselves

from fighting, perform

the prayer, and pay the

prescribed alms’? When

fighting was ordained

for them, some of them

feared men as much as,

or even more than,

they feared God, saying,

‘Lord, why have You ordained

fighting for us? If only You would

give us just a little more time.’ Say

to them, ‘Little is the enjoyment

in this world, the Hereafter is

far better for those who are

mindful of God: you will not

be wronged by as much as

the fibre in a date stone.

78. Death will

overtake you

no matter where

you may be, even

inside high towers.’

When good fortune

comes their way, they say,

‘This is from God,’ but when

harm befalls them, they say,

‘This is from you [Prophet].’ Say

to them, ‘Both come from God.’

What is the matter with these

people that they can barely

understand what

they are told?

79. Anything good that

happens to you [Prophet]

is from God; anything bad is

[ultimately] from yourself. We

have sent you as a messenger to

people; God is sufficient witness.

80. Whoever obeys the

Messenger obeys God.

If some pay no heed,

We have not sent you

to be their keeper.

81. They say,

‘We obey you,’

but as soon as they

leave your presence,

some of them scheme by

night to do other than what

you said. God records what they

scheme, so leave them alone,

and put your trust in God:

He is a sufficient protector.

82. Will they not think

about this Quran?

If it had been from

anyone other than God,

they would have found

much inconsistency in it.

83. Whenever news of

any matter comes to them,

whether concerning peace

or war, they spread it about; if

they referred it to the Messenger

and those in authority among them,

those seeking its meaning would

have found it out from them. If

it were not for God’s bounty and

mercy towards you, you would

almost all have followed Satan.

84. So [Prophet] fight

in God’s way. You are

accountable only

for yourself.

Urge the believers on.

God may well curb the

power of the disbelievers, for

He is stronger in might and

more terrible in punishment.

85. Whoever speaks

for a good cause will share

in its benefits and whoever

speaks for a bad cause will

share in its burden:
God controls everything.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said,

"Whoever killed a person

having a treaty with the Muslims,

shall not smell the smell of Paradise

though its smell is perceived from

a distance of forty years."

Sahih al-Bukhari 3166

Rules Of War

1. The prohibition of killing
women and children

Anas ibn Malik reports
that the Messenger of Allah
(may peace be upon him)
forbade the killing of women
and children.
[Muslim: 4320]

2. Killing of non-combatants such as
old people, monks and workers is
explicitly forbidden
in Islamic scripture

Ibn Abbas narrates that the Prophet
(may peace be upon him)
said to an outgoing army,
“Leave in the name of God, and
upon the way of his messenger.
Do not kill any old person”.
[Al-Bayhaqi: 16689]

Ibn Abbas also narrates from
the Prophet (may peace be upon him)
said, “Do not ever kill the people
living in towers (monks).
[Nayl al-Awtar: 3324]

Rabah ibn Rabee’ says he left in an expedition

with the prophet (peace be upon him),
who went up to Khalid ibn Walid [his general]
and said “Do not kill the workers / wage earners
[those workers not fighting you]”.
[Ahmad: 15562]

3. The prohibition of hurting
the disabled and infirm

The blind, the infirm and the monks
are not to be killed according to
Islamic legal scholars as they are not
from among the combatants,
similar to the old person.
[Al-Mugni: 7612]

4. Islam prohibits the mutilation
of dead combatants

Fight in the name of Allah
and in the way of Allah…
do not break your pledge; and do not
mutilate (the dead) bodies;
do not kill the children.
[Muslim 4294]

5. The Qur’an commands Muslims
to show mercy to those
combatants who surrender

And if one of the disbelievers surrenders
and pleads mercy, then show mercy
so that they can hear the words of Allah,
and then allow him to go back
to his place of safety.
[
Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 5]

6. Treatment of prisoners of war

And they give food,
in spite of their love for it,
to the Miskeen (the poor),
the orphan, and the captive,
(Saying): ‘We feed you seeking
Allah’s Countenance only.
We wish for no reward,
nor thanks from you”.
[Surah Al-Insan, Verse 8-9]

Ibn ‘Abbas said: in those days their prisoners
were mushrikeen (polytheists)
on the day of Badr the Messenger of Allah
(may peace be upon him) commanded them
to be kind to their prisoners, so they used to
put them before themselves when it came to food…
Mujahid said, this refers to the one who is detained,
i.e., they would give food to these prisoners
even though they themselves desired it
and loved it. [Tafsir ibn Kathir: Al-Insan]

7. Even the cutting of trees,
destroying surroundings
and killing animals
without reason is illegal

Abu Bakr said, “I advise you,
do not cut the fruitful trees,
or destroy homes. And do not
wound the sheep, goats or cattle
except to for eating”.
[Al-Muwatta: 949]

8. There can be no forced conversion

Let there be no compulsion in religion –
Truth stands out clear from Error!
Whoever rejects evil and believes in
God has grasped the most trustworthy
hand-hold, that never breaks.
And Allah hears and knows
all things.
[Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse 256]

The Quran
Surah Al-Baqarah
The Cow

190. Fight
in the way of Allah
those who fight you
but do not transgress.
Indeed, Allah does not
like transgressors.

191. And kill them
wherever you overtake them
and expel them from wherever
they have expelled you,
and fitnah (oppression)
is worse than killing.
And do not fight them
at al-Masjid al-Haram
until they fight you there.
But if they fight you,
then kill them.
Such is the
recompense of
the disbelievers.

192. And if

they cease,

then indeed,

Allah is Forgiving

and Merciful.

193. Fight them

until there is no [more]

fitnah (oppression)

and [until] worship is

[acknowledged to be]

for Allah. But if they cease,

then there is to be no

aggression except

against the

oppressors.

194. [Fighting in]

the sacred month is for

[aggression committed in]

the sacred month,

and for [all] violations

is legal retribution. So

whoever has assaulted you,

then assault him in the same

way that he has assaulted you.

And fear Allah and know that

Allah is with those who fear Him.

195. And spend in the way

of Allah and do not throw

[yourselves] with your [own] hands

into destruction [by refraining].

And do good; indeed, Allah loves

the doers of good...

216. Fighting is

ordained for you,

though you dislike it.

You may dislike something

although it is good for you,

or like something

although it is bad for you:

Allah knows and you do not.

but when they are alone, they bite

The Quran
Surah As-Sajdah
The Prostration
Verse 13

Had We willed,

We could have easily

imposed guidance

on every soul.

But My Word

will come to pass:

I will surely fill up Hell

with jinn and humans

all together.

The Messenger of Allah,
peace and blessings be upon
him, said, “This religion will be
victorious until you pass beyond the seas
and fight upon the seas in the way of Allah,
then after you, will come people who recite
the Quran. They will say: We recite the
Quran, so who is better at reciting than us?
Who has more understanding than us? Who
has more knowledge than us?” Then the
Prophet turned to his companions and he
said, “Is there any good in these people?”
They said no. The Prophet said, “These
people are among you, from this nation.
These are fuel for the Hellfire.”
