Chapter 53
Surah An-Najm
The Star

In The Name Of Allah

The Most Gracious

The Most Merciful

1. By the star when it sets!

2. Your companion (Muhammad) has neither gone astray nor deluded.

3. Nor does he speak from his own desire.

4. It is only an Inspiration that is inspired.

5. He has been taught (this Qur'an) by one mighty in power (Gabriel).

6. Free from any defect in body and mind, then he rose and became stable.

7. While he was in the highest part of the horizon,

8. then he approached and came closer,

9. at a distance of two bows' length or nearer,

10. so did (Allah) convey the Inspiration to His slave.

11. The (Prophet's) heart lied not (in seeing) what he saw.

12. Are you going to dispute with him what he saw with his own eyes?

13. Indeed he saw him at a second descent,

14. by the lote tree beyond which none may pass

15. near the Garden of Restfulness,

16. when the tree was covered in a nameless [splendour].

17. His sight never wavered, nor was it too bold,

18. indeed he did see of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord.

19. Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (idols)

20. and Manat, the other third?

21. Is it for you to have the males and for Him the females?

22. That indeed is a division most unfair!

23. They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord!

24. Or shall man have all that he wishes?

25. When that fact is, to Allah belongs this life and the next.

26. There are many angels in the heavens, whose intercession will avail nothing except after Allah has given leave for whom He wills.

27. Verily, those who believe not in the Hereafter, name the angels with female names.

28. While they have no knowledge thereof. They follow but a guess, and verily, a guess is no substitute for the truth.

29. Therefore withdraw (O Muhammad) from him who turns away from Our Reminder and desires nothing but the life of this world.

30. Their knowledge does not go beyond that. Your Lord knows best who strays from His path and who follows guidance.

31. Everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Allah. He will repay those who do evil according to their deeds, and reward with what is best, those who do good.

32. As for those who avoid grave sins and foul acts, though they may commit small sins, your Lord is ample in forgiveness. He has been aware of you from the time He produced you from the earth and from your hiding places in your mothers’ wombs, so do not assert your own goodness: He knows best who is mindful of Him.

33. Did you (O Muhammad) observe him who turned away.

34. And gave a little, then stopped (giving)?

35. Is with him the knowledge of the unseen, can he see the hereafter?

36. Has he not been told what was written in the Scriptures of Moses

37. and of Abraham, who fulfilled his duty:

38. that no soul shall bear the burden of another;

39. that man will only have what he has worked towards;

40. that his deeds will be seen,

41. he will be recompensed with a full and the best recompense;

42. that to your Lord is the End of everything.

43. It is He Who makes whom He wills laugh, and makes whom He wills weep;

44. that it is He Who causes death and gives life;

45. that He creates the pairs, male and female,

46. from an ejected drop of sperm; when it is emitted;

47. that upon Him is another bringing forth (Resurrection);

48. that it is He who gives wealth and possessions;

49. that He is the Lord of Sirius (the star pagan Arabs worship);

50. that it is He Who destroyed the former 'Ad,

51. and Thamud. He spared none of them.

52. And the people Noah, verily, they were more unjust and more rebellious.

53. And He destroyed the overturned cities (Sodom and Gomorrah),

54. with what He completely enveloped them with (burning stones).

55. Then which of the Graces of your Lord will you doubt.

56. This (Muhammad) is a warner of the warners of old.

57. The Day of Resurrection draws near,

58. none besides Allah can avert it.

59. Do you then wonder at this recital?

60. And you laugh at it and not weep,

61. wasting your life in vain amusements.

62. Now fall down in prostration, and worship.
